Cortana communicates better with phones and PC: During its Build conference, Microsoft demonstrated a new technology for its Cortana voice assistant that allows for a much smoother conversation than is currently done.
In the futuristic world of Star Trek, people do not spend their time listening to their phone or typing on a keyboard. Instead, they have conversations with their computers. This future where one discusses with the machine in a continuous way as one does with a human is not as distant as one might think. Apparently, it would even be possible already.
At its Build Developers Conference, Microsoft introduced a new technology for its Cortana voice assistant. Part of the acquisition of a company called Semantic Machines, it allows someone to have an ongoing conversation with Cortana to keep track of appointments, reminders and similar tasks.
Currently, voice assistants can be asked to read the contents of the agenda. But Microsoft believes that in the not-too-distant future, we will not need to systematically say the activation phrase "Cortana" or "Ok Google"! Instead, we will simply ask our assistants to always listen to what is our schedule for the day, if the right people have been invited to meetings and where we have planned lunch.
The video demonstration above offers a promising insight into the evolution of this technology. Today we have to go through a hodgepodge of strange phrases and repeated voice commands to get what we want. And mistakes are still many, especially when dictating a message.
This is partly why Microsoft is touting its progress. Although the Cortana wizard is included in Windows 10 and available on Android and iOS, it is not as widely used as Apple's Siri, Amazon's Google Assistant or Alexa (source Voicebot.ai )
However, Microsoft has not given up. Two years ago, the publisher introduced a new technology that it offers businesses to make it easier to understand what you're saying, even if you do not say it exactly as the computer would normally do. For example, if a video game you play expects you to say, " how old are you " and you say " you look very young, " he will know that you mean essentially the same thing.
Microsoft has also created new features for Skype that display live subtitles of what people are saying and can even translate languages in real time.
However, the American giant has not indicated precisely when it will be able to offer this conversational AI technology to as many people. For now, it's just a demonstration...
