Smartphone sales will plummet like never this year, according to Gartner. According to predictions from the analyst firm, global mobile phone shipments will fall by 68 million this year. A larger decline than PCs and tablets.
Mobile phone sales are not what they used to be. Consumers do not rush as before to change laptops. According to a report by Gartner, global mobile phone shipments are expected to decline by 68 million units in 2019 (1.7 billion units), down 3.8 percent from last year. The analyst firm estimates that this is the worst decline so far for smartphones. He attributes this decline in demand to the fact that consumers are keeping their phones longer and waiting for radical technological changes to change them.
This year, shipments of smartphones, tablets and PCs will total 2.14 billion units against 2.22 billion in 2018. Other analysts like eMarketer have predicted a slowdown in the smartphone market by 2020.
To stop this decline, mobile phone manufacturers will try to bait consumers with 5G in the coming year. By 2023, Gartner predicts that 5G phones could account for 51% of sales, up from 6% in 2020.
For now, there are only a handful of 5G smartphones available on the market. These include the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G and the LG V50 ThinQ. And 5G networks are only available in limited areas in some US and European cities at the moment.
