iFixit says that the foldable screen of the Glaaxy Fold is fragile and that spaces along the hinge can let dirt through.
Some test copies of the highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy Fold sent to the press had malfunctioned last week, just before its official release (April 26) which was finally postponed. A disassembly of iFixit released yesterday gives some possible explanations on what is wrong with the folding screen smartphone at 2,000 euros.
According to iFixit, the Galaxy Fold is an "alarming fragility" that makes potential repairs difficult and could explain the malfunctions and damage faced by several phones sent to critics last week. iFixit noted that thin curbs are not flexible enough to survive constant folding and unfolding and replacing the screen would be very expensive.
Galaxy Fold's Oled screen is "tricky"
iFixit also noted that the Fold's Oled screen is "tricky". The camera hinge and the preinstalled screen protector could also play a role in the phone's problems. The film is not intended to be removed, and any attempt will irreparably damage the display. "The phone is shipped unfolded, but just fold it once so that the fold becomes easy enough to spot if you look," says iFixit. And to add that the smartphone has certainly resisted 200,000 tests of robots, but that humans use the devices in real conditions and are not as soft as the machines.
In addition, the absence of "protection against the penetration of the hinges" means that "large spaces around the hinge let in dirt that can get caught between the hinge and the screen," says iFixit. These spaces are visible when the device is closed, even if the screen is protected.
Several test copies experienced screen problems, flickering and for one of them a localized deformation. Samsung decided this week to delay the release of the device and recalled the test copies. The models tested by the editors of Cnet.com and CnetFR did not experience any damage.
When it was dismantled, iFixit also found two batteries, front and back, coarsely glued inside the fold. The site gave the Galaxy Fold a score of 2 out of 10 on its repairability scale, the 10 being the easiest to repair.
