Xiaomi Mi 9T: the Chinese firm dominates more than ever the mid-range

Xiaomi Mi 9T: the Chinese firm dominates more than ever the mid-range. Does the term "flagship killer" still make sense in 2019? Yes ! And Xiaomi proves it with its Xiaomi Mi 9T, the European version of the Redmi K20 that we could take in hand.

Launched a month ago in China, the Redmi K20 has finally arrived on the French market but under another name, the Xiaomi Mi 9T. The goal is undoubtedly to seduce European consumers who are closer to Xiaomi for the moment. It is priced at 349 euros that its basic version (6 + 64 GB) has been marketed. A very aggressive price when we take a look at the technical sheet of this smartphone but that is not surprising when we know Redmi and Xiaomi. For years, the company of Lei Jun breaks the prices in all segments and it is not about to stop with this Xiaomi Mi 9T which, despite the lack of common points with the Mi 9, hit hard .

Design: the game of 7 differences

As said earlier, the Xiaomi Mi 9T does not look like the Xiaomi Mi 9 at all, and that's already reflected in the design. On the front, the manufacturer opts for a 6.39-inch AMOLED, Full HD + and HDR display that occupies almost all the space (91.9% aspect ratio). Under this slab, we are surprised to see that the Mi 9T welcomes a fingerprint reader given its price.
On the back of this phone, we also have something very different to start with this special coating "nano-holographic" that gives it a rather unique design. If we also find a triple camera on this part of the Xiaomi Mi 9T, it has been refocused and one of the modules was separated from the other two.
All physical controls are on the right side but the Xiaomi Mi 9's Google Assistant button is not part of the party. On the front of this terminal, we welcome the mini-jack port, missing the Mi 9, and this is not the only additional element that the Xiaomi Mi 9T displays. Indeed, the European version of the Redmi K20 has a retractable front camera based on a system very close to the OnePlus 7 Pro. We end with the Mi 9T chin that offers a USB-C port and a speaker.
Despite its weight of 191 grams, the Xiaomi Mi 9T handles with ease and does not slip hands. The buttons on the right side of the device are pretty well arranged and the fingerprint reader under the screen is placed in the right place to be reached without having to break a thumb. The Mi 9T should be quite solid as the front and back are protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 coating.

A bright and well calibrated AMOLED display for the Xiaomi Mi 9T

The Xiaomi Mi 9T features a 6.39-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels at a resolution of 403 dpi. When taken in hand - indoors, it is important to specify - the slab of this smartphone was very bright. We also appreciated the accuracy of the colors displayed. In short, the Xiaomi Mi 9T should be able to offer the best screen in the market at this price. Recall that it is particularly rare to see OLED in this segment, manufacturers preferring to opt for LCD to reduce production costs.

A solid technical configuration

Unlike OnePlus which keeps the same technical configuration on its T range, Xiaomi goes down a notch by giving the Mi 9T a Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 chip. According to the Chinese brand, this chip engraved in 8 nm would offer the same performance than a 800 series chip and more precisely than an 845. As a reminder, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor can be found in the most powerful smartphones of 2018 like the OnePlus 6T, Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL or the Razer Phone 2. According to Xiaomi, the Snapdragon 730 would offer the smartphone "a 35% increase in CPU performance and 10% GPU performance, compared to its predecessor, the Snapdragon 710" . On the Xiaomi Mi 9T, this chip is combined with 6 GB of RAM.
In practice, the interface is very fluid. The gaming experience should also be appreciated especially since this smartphone embeds Game Turbo 2.0 mode to optimize its performance for the game. Finally, the Mi 9T Xiaomi includes a storage space of 64 or 128 GB no extensible.

A well supplied photo part

The Xiaomi Mi 9T is part of a triple dorsal sensor that consists of the following:
  • A 48 megapixel main sensor opening at f / 1.8
  • A telephoto x2 of 8 million pixels opening to f / 2.4
  • An ultra wide-angle lens (124.8 °) of 13 million pixels opening at f / 2.4
After briefly taking a few shots with the Xiaomi Mi 9T, we notice that the smoothing of the subjects is present, which is not without reminding us of the Xiaomi Mi 9 renderings. We will tell you more after having tested it more length.
We swing to the front and we are interested in the retractable front camera of Mi 9T. The latter has 20 million pixels and its objective opens at f / 2.2. It takes a little more than a second to activate so to unlock this phone, it is recommended that you rather go through the fingerprint reader. According to Xiaomi, this "pop-up" camera can perform 300,000 open-close cycles and if you are afraid of breaking it after a fall, know that the Mi 9T incorporates a gravity detection feature. Thus, the module will return to its initial position before touching the ground. During our handling, we noticed the same problems as on the back module namely a smoothness a little too pronounced despite a faithful transcript of colors. Again, our opinion will be expanded after our test.

Competition

In front of him, the Xiaomi Mi 9T has very few rivals in that its technical sheet allows it to be solid in almost all areas. The only smartphone that can really be threatening is the Pixel 3A, the excellent Google phone, which is above the Mi 9T outdoors and indoors. It will be necessary to add 100 euros more to really find better on the market.
