Halloween Candy Corn Varieties - Plenty of candy corn varieties: The thing that's hard to understand Candy Corn-flavored candy - not candy corn, but other sweets that taste so - is that it's a candy defined more by its texture than its flavor.

Halloween Candy Corn

What is "Candy Corn Flavor", other than slightly caramelized sugar? Is candy-corn flavored candy not just sugar-flavored sugar?

These are the mysteries of the universe that evolve like ghosts every Halloween - aka candy maize season. Some people will never tackle any of these questions because they'll never touch a kernel of candy corn with their lips. It is one of the most controversial sweets. "Satan's earwax," they say.

A survey by Mashable found that Candy Corn was the hottest candy in 21 states. There is a famous Lewis Black piece in which he reflects on the origin of sweetcorn: "Any sweetcorn that has ever been produced was made in 1911. And because no one eats this stuff, a lot of it remains every year Sweet corn company sends the boys to the villages and they collect all the sweets we've thrown away from the dumpsters. "

He is not too far away, at least during the day. According to the National Confectioners' Association, Candy Corn was invented in the 1880s, and Americans were crazy about it, with its unmistakable sweet taste and slightly stale, marshmallowy texture. For about 100 years, it has remained largely unchanged. But recently, sweet corn producers have switched it to new flavors.

And other confectionery companies are trying to use nostalgia for flavor by offering treats with sweetcorn flavor - whatever that means. Here is our assessment:

Halloween is just around the corner, meaning kids are being filled with enough sugar everywhere to turn their blood into syrup.

All the sweets can make parents wince so that a "healthy Halloween" sounds like a little oxymoron. What fun is the holiday without a mountain of sweets at the end of the night?

While it can be a bit tricky, it is possible to keep your kids fun during the holidays while not spoiling too much in chocolate, gummy bears and caramels.

Brack's naturally spiced Candy Corn (gluten-free): If Candy Corn is just a little too orange, there's a very natural alternative: Brach's, the Candy Corn Kingpin, has a version of the candy that is colored with beta-carotene and turmeric instead of yellow 6, yellow 5 and red 3. It is also gluten-free and has a healthy appearance packaging design to make you think it is a health food. It looks pastel-colored, and the exterior of the candy cornflakes appeared slightly cracked - scary! It tastes just like the normal candy corn, I promise.

Brahm's Maple Candy Corn: These candy corns come in different flavors of khaki, and they look a bit like coffee stains teeth. They do not actually contain maple syrup, in case you're wondering. You are ... alright, if you stand on such a thing? They taste similar to the flavor packs that you put in oatmeal. The combination of maple and candy corn is a rather controversial marriage unpopular taste and texture, so I welcome this very brave decision.

Brach's Pie Favorites Candy Corn: Two flavors, one bag. There are the reddish-orange candies that have apple pie flavor, and usually taste cinnamon with a hint of artificial apple. And then there's the brown candy corn, which is flavored with pumpkin pie and tastes vaguely of medicine and chewing gum. Not everything has to be a seasoned pumpkin.

Brach's S'mores Candy Corn: They have a dark brown chocolate base, a white center for the marshmallow, and a light orange-tan tip for the Graham Cracker, which is pretty clever. Do you like Tootsie Rolls, but do you want them to have a less tough, more friable texture? Then you will like these.

Sour Patch Kids Candy Corn: We had expected it to be a rubbery Sour Patch Kid, molded into a seasonal Halloween shape. Instead, it was a fruit-flavored sweetcorn covered in sour stain dust, a mix of texture and flavor that was a little disconcerting. Nevertheless, it works in a strange way. At least it was better than the pumpkin pie Candy Corn. It comes in orange and grape, and the latter is surprisingly good. I would not recommend this for anyone over 11, but I'll bet it's a hit at your kid's Halloween party.

M & M's White Candy Corn: They're M & M's in the traditional Candy Corn color scheme of white, orange and yellow, and that's where the similarities end. They taste like white chocolate. They are white chocolate. White chocolate is the worst taste of M & M.

Jet-Puffed Candy Corn Mallows: Did You Know That Marshmallow Was An Ingredient In The Original Candy Corn Recipe? These marshmallows are shaped like sweetcorn, but they are more marshmallow flavored than candy corn flavored. You would be treated to a good tip on Halloween cupcakes or Rice Krispie.

Trader Joe's Candy Corn Popcorn: It's a thick, candy-coated cauldron of corn that comes in candy corn colors, and it's really good. You could inhale a whole bag of it. It's like the best possible form of Cracker Jack. It does not taste particularly sweetcorn, but what is candy corn flavor anyway? Who cares?
